What Are The Cub Scouts Bear Requirements? (2024)
Starting in June 2024 the Bear Rank will have 6 required adventures to complete and 2 elective adventures. There are around 20 different electives to choose from.

Bear Cub Scout - Required Adventures
The following 6 Adventures are required for a Bear Scout to receive their Bear badge. You can see all the details in the Bear Scout Handbook. We also have a time saving Quick Overview sheet that is a great addition to your Cub Scout Binder.
- Get to know the members of your den.
- Recite the scout oath & scout law with your den & den leader.
- Learn about the scout oath. Identify the 3 points of the scout oath.
- With your den, create a code of conduct.
- Learn about the Denner position & responsibilities.
- demonstrate the cub scout sign, handshake, and salute. Show how each is used.
- Share with your den or family a time when you demonstrated the Cub Scout motto, “Do your best. Explain why it is important to do your best.
- At home with a parent or legal guardian, do the activities in the booklet “How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide.”
- Prepare for a 1-mile hike by gathering the Cub Scout 6 Essentials & weather-appropriate clothing & shoes.
- “KNOW Before You Go” Identify the location of your walk on a map and confirm your 1-mile route.
- “Choose the right path” Learn About the path & surrounding area you will be walking on.
- “Trash Your Trash” Develop a plan of what you will do with your personal trash or trash you find along the trail.
- “Leave What You Find” Take pictures along your walk or bring your sketchbook to draw 5 things that you want to remember on your walk.
- “Be Careful With Fire” Determine the fire danger rating along the path.
- “Respect Wildlife” From a safe distance, identify as you look up, down, & around you for, 6 signs of any mammals, birds, insects, & reptiles.
- “Be Kind To Other Visitors” Identify what you need to do as a den to be kind to others on the path.
- Go on your 1 milk walk while practicing your leave no trace principles.
- Familiarize yourself with the flag of the united states of America including the history, demonstrating how to raise & lower the flag, how to properly fold & display, & the united states etiquette.
- Identify 3 symbols that represent the united states Pick your favorite and make a model, work of art, or other craft that depicts the symbol.
- Learn about the mission of any non-profit. find out how they fund their activities & how volunteers are used to help.
- Participate in a service project.
- Familiarize yourself with the flag of the united states of America including the history, demonstrating how to raise & lower the flag, how to properly fold & display, & the united states etiquette.
- Identify 3 symbols that represent the united states Pick your favorite and make a model, work of art, or other craft that depicts the symbol.
- Learn about the mission of any non-profit. find out how they fund their activities & how volunteers are used to help.
- Participate in a service project.
- With your parent or legal guardian talk about your family’s faith traditions. Identify 3 holidays or celebrations that are part of your family’s faith traditions. Make a craft, work of art, or food item that is part of your favorite family’s faith tradition holiday or celebration.
- With your family, attend a religious service or other gathering that shows how your family expresses family & reverence.
- Carry out an act of kindness.
- With your parent or legal guardian identify a religion or faith that is different than yours. Identify 2 things that is has in common with your family’s beliefs.
- With permission from your parent or legal guardian, Watch the Protect Yourself Rules video for the bear rank.
- Complete the personal space bubble worksheet That is part of the protect yourself rules resources.
- with your parent or legal guardian set up a family policy for digital devices.
- Identify common personal safety gear for your head, eyes, mouth, hands & feet. List how each of these items protects you. Demonstrate the proper use of personal safety gear for an activity
Bear Cub Scouts Elective Adventures
The following 20 Adventures are elective and can be completed if the den would like to. Only 2 must be completed to earn the Bear Badge. All of the adventures are broken down in the Bear Scout Handbook.
- Learn about 3 types of fish in your area.
- Learn about your local fishing regulations with your den leader or adult.
- List 3 of the regulations you learned about, & one reason each regulation exists.
- Become familiar with the safe use of the fishing equipment you will be using on your outing.
- Learn the proper way to attach the hook, lure, or fly to the line.
- Go on a fishing adventure, and for 30 minutes or more put into practice the things you learned about fish & fishing equipment.
- Learn about some basic tools & the proper use of each tool. Learn about & understand the need for safety when you work with tools.
- Practice using 4 of the tools you learned about in requirement 1.
- Choose a project to build.
- Determine the tools & materials needed to build your project in requirement 3.
- Build your project.
- Make trail mix using trail mix math.
- Identify an animal that has a pattern to their physical appearance. Investigate how the animal uses its pattern.
- Find example of bilateral symmetry in nature.
- Find examples of radial symmetry in nature.
- Before attempting requirements 6 & 7 for this adventure, you must pass the BSA swimmer test.
- Pick a paddle craft for which to complete all requirements: canoe, kayak, or stand-up Paddleboard (sup)
- With your den or adult, discuss the role of qualified adult supervision at a paddle craft activity.
- Explain the safety rules to follow when using a paddle craft.
- Discover how to tell if a life jacket is the correct size & approved for your paddle craft activity. Demonstrate how to wear it.
- Explore how your paddle craft responds as you move your paddle through the water from different places.
- Have 30 minutes or more of canoe, kayak, or SUP Paddle time.
Bears On Bikes
- Show how to properly wear a bicycle helmet.
- Decide what you should wear when riding a bicycle.
- Demonstrate proper hand signals.
- Demonstrate how to adjust the saddle height.
- Demonstrate how to operate brakes.
- Learn how to use a pump to inflate your tires. Discuss why riding with low -pressure or flat tires is unsafe & can cause damage to your bike.
- With your den, pack, or family, following the buddy system, take a 30 minute bike ride.
- Discover natural resources.
- Discover what happens to wastewater in your community.
- Investigate soil
- Investigate air polution.
- Participate in a conservation project.
- Pick a kitchen appliance that uses technology to complete the following requirements.
- With an adult, review the safety guidelines in the owner’s manual & follow all safety guidelines.
- With adult supervision, download a cooking app or search online to find a recipe.
- With adult supervision, follow the selected recipe and make the recipe.
- Think of a way technology can improve the appliance used to make your recipe.
- Identify an animal that would be a good pet for your family.
- Choose 2 animals that are allowed as pets in your community. Compare & contrast why these pets may be a good choice for you.
- based on your choice from Req. 1 investigate how to properly care for your chosen animal.
- discover 3 ways a pet can help people.
- Explore the term “forensics” and how it is used to help solve crimes.
- Analyze your fingerprints.
- Make a shoe imprint.
- Do an analysis of 4 different substances: salt, sugar, Baking Soda, & cornstarch.
- Learn about chromatography & how it is used in solving crimes.
- Find out how officers collect evidence.
- Review the buddy system and how it works in the outdoors.
- Pack your Cub Scout 6 Essentials.
- In addition to your 6 essentials, show the personal items you need for your campout.
- Help set up a tent. Determine a good spot for the tent. Explain why you picked the spot.
- Attend a council or district cub scout overnight camp or attend a campout with your pack.
- Make a marble bag.
- Learn 5 words that are used when talking about marbles.
- Play 3 different marble games.
- Build a marble racetrack with at least 2 lanes.
- Build a marble maze.
- With your Adult Partner, assemble & decorate either a Pinewood Derby car or a Raingutter Regatta boat.
- Learn the rules of the race for the vehicle chosen in Requirement 1.
- Identify how you could increase the speed of your chosen vehicle.
- Before the race, discuss with your den how you will demonstrate good sportsmanship during the race.
- With your AP, participate in a Pinewood Derby or Raingutter Regatta race.
- Think about what makes you laugh. Discuss these with your den or family.
- Practice reading tongue twisters.
- Play charades with your den or family.
- Have a “funniest joke” contest with your den or family.
- Practice “run-ons” with your den or family.
- With your den or an adult, identify the attributes of qualified adult supervision at a swimming activity.
- Learn the 3 swimming ability groups for the bsa and water depths appropriate for each.
- Go swimming with your den, pack, or family for 30 minutes using the buddy system.
- Demonstrate the use of the buddy system, buddy checks, & ability groups with our den or adult.
- Attempt the BSA beginner swim test.
- Demonstrate both a reach rescue & a throw rescue.
- During the months May- August participate in a total of 3 Cub Scout activities.
- Conduct a static electricity investigation.
- Conduct the sink-or-float investigation.
- Conduct the color-morphing investigation.
- Conduct a color-layering investigation.
- Read, understand, & promise to abide by the “Cub Scout knife safety rules.
- Demonstrate the knife safety circle.
- Demonstrate that you know how to care for & use your pocketknife safely.
- Make 2 carvings with a pocket knife.
- Identify & wear the appropriate safety gear.
- Recite the archery range safety rules & whistle commands.
- Demonstrate proper range commands.
- Identify the main parts of your shooting equipment & How to properly use them.
- Demonstrate proper stance & shooting techniques.
- Shoot 5 arrows at a target. repeat 3 times & do your best to improve your score. Shoot at least 15 arrows.
- Demonstrate how to safely retrieve your arrows.
- Discuss how to put away & properly store your archery shooting equipment after use.
- Explain what you should do if you find a gun. Recite the 4 safety reminders.
- Identify and wear the appropriate safety gear.
- Demonstrate proper range commands.
- Show how to use the safety mechanism.
- Demonstrate how to properly load, fire, & secure your BB gun.
- Demonstrate one of the positions for shooting a BB gun.
- Gire 5 BB’s at the target. With the help of your AP score your target. Repeat 3 times and do your best to improve your score. Fire at least 15 BB’s.
- Discuss how to put away & properly store your BB gun & shooting equipment after use.
- Identify & wear the appropriate safety gear.
- Recite the archery range safety rules for using a slingshot.
- Demonstrate proper range commands.
- Identify the main parts of your slingshot & their usage.
- Discover the types of ammunition that may be used & not used.
- Shoot 5 shots at a target. repeat 2 times & do your best to improve your score. Shoot at least 15 shots.
- Discuss how to put away & properly store your slingshot & shooting equipment after use.
